Verdicchio

Also known as Trebbiano di Lugana, Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano Verde.

Verdicchio is a white Italian wine grape native to the Marche, where roughly two-thirds of its plantings are found, with smaller amounts in Lombardy and the Veneto. It is widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest white varieties, prized for its high acidity, structure, and unusual capacity to age. Its name derives from verde ('green'), a reference to the faint green tint of both the berries and the finished wine.

In the glass Verdicchio is characteristically floral and delicately fruity, showing green apple and a signature bitter-almond note on the finish, often with a saline, mineral edge. The same acidity that makes it refreshing when young also lets the best examples — especially the DOCG Riserva bottlings from the Castelli di Jesi and Matelica — develop for many years. Under the synonyms Trebbiano di Soave and Trebbiano di Lugana it is also the backbone of Lugana on the shores of Lake Garda.
