History

Fontanafredda was born of a royal love story: King Vittorio Emanuele II bought the estate in 1858 for Rosa Vercellana, and their son Emanuele Alberto founded the winery, releasing one of the first bottles labelled 'Barolo' in 1878 and painting the village in Savoy ochre stripes. Now the largest organic estate in Piemonte, it makes Barolo from Serralunga and, since 1950 with Contessa Rosa, was a cradle of Piedmontese traditional-method sparkling that became Alta Langa.
