Corvina Veronese

Also known as Corvina, Cruina.

The principal red grape of Verona's Valpolicella and Bardolino families — the base of Amarone della Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Bardolino, and Bardolino Superiore. Thin-skinned but naturally high in acid, it gives light-to-medium-bodied wines with sour-cherry and bitter-almond character, and its thick-enough skin resists rot well enough to be a mainstay of Valpolicella's appassimento (drying) tradition behind Amarone and Recioto.

MASAF's own Registro Nazionale delle Varietà di Vite (scheda 070) registers this variety under the bare name "Corvina," with "Cruina" (Veronese vernacular) as an official synonym and "Corbina" flagged explicitly as an ERRONEOUS synonym — the registry's own ampelographic study coined the qualifier "veronese" specifically to distinguish the Verona-province grape (and its close relatives Corvinone, Corvina rizza, and Corvina gentile) from several unrelated, similarly-named grapes elsewhere in Veneto (Corbina vicentina/nostrana, Corbinella padovana, Cruina di Asolo) — including the genuinely distinct "Corbina N." (MASAF scheda 406) that a handful of Veneto disciplinari, like Bagnoli di Sopra, separately register as its own variety. This dataset uses "Corvina Veronese" as the canonical name because it is what all six of Verona's own core DOCG/DOC disciplinari (Amarone, Recioto della Valpolicella, Bardolino Superiore, Bardolino, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso) name the grape as in their own Art. 2 text — each of them also glossing it locally as "Cruina" or "Corvina." Garda DOC (drafted jointly with Lombardia) instead uses the shorter "Corvina" as its own varietal-typology name ("Garda Corvina") for the same registered variety, scheda 070 — corrected here to the canonical "Corvina Veronese" per this rollout's canonical-name pitfall, in the same way Malvasia del Chianti was corrected to Malvasia Bianca Lunga.
