Mosciarella delle Casette di Capranica Prenestina

Capranica Prenestina stands on a ridge of the Prenestini among woods and chestnut groves that are centuries old. Cato already names the chestnuts of these mountains in the De agri cultura, and they fed the people here for a very long time. Real cultivation was pushed first in the Middle Ages, under the impulse of the Countess Matilda of Canossa, and the two comuni's statutes, the earliest from 1200, show how the groves were valued: their use for fruit and for timber was closely regulated, with penalties for damage and theft.
