History

Arnaldo Caprai, a textile entrepreneur, founded the estate in 1971 with just three hectares at Montefalco. From 1988 his son Marco Caprai turned it into the driving force behind the revival of Sagrantino, a native grape then reduced to a handful of hectares and mostly made as a sweet passito. Championing dry, structured, age-worthy Sagrantino, Caprai's advocacy helped elevate Montefalco Sagrantino to DOCG in 1992. The flagship Sagrantino 25 Anni was first made with the 1993 vintage to mark the winery's 25th anniversary.
