Pesca Tradizionale dello Stretto di Messina

The Strait divides Sicily from Calabria and the Ionian from the Tyrrhenian, and it has carried migrations and colonies for millennia. Its currents and winds are in the Odyssey, as Scylla on one side and the whirlpool of Charybdis on the other, which is where the phrase comes from. It is also one of the Mediterranean's great biodiversity hotspots, a corridor between the western and eastern basins: the bottom is wreck-strewn and cut by canyons that begin at the Sella, the narrowest and shallowest point at 64 metres between Ganzirri and Punta Pezzo, and fall past 3,000 metres off Syracuse. Fishing here is as old as the record of eating tuna.
