Lampedusa Salted Round Sardinella
Round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) salted on Lampedusa. Stockier and larger than the common sardine, reaching 30 cm, it shoals in the southern Mediterranean and is caught in quantity in the Strait of Sicily. Salted, it was once what sustained Lampedusans through the long sponge-fishing voyages.
