Malvasia

"Malvasia" is a large family of mostly aromatic grapes found across the Mediterranean, made dry, sweet, or for orange wine — it is a shared family name, not one single genetic variety. MASAF's national vine register lists multiple distinct varieties under this name (e.g. Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Malvasia Istriana, Malvasia Nera).

AMBIGUITY NOTE: three Tuscan denominations reference the bare, unqualified name "Malvasia" without specifying which registered variety is meant, and each disciplinare deliberately leaves it undisambiguated. Maremma Toscana's Vin Santo base (Art. 2.1) names generic "Malvasia"; its own non-binding Art. 9.A2 prose separately mentions "Malvasia bianca lunga" as a traditional local variety, but the disciplinare does not promote that hint to normative status. Barco Reale di Carmignano's Art. 2.1 also uses the bare term, in explicit contrast to sibling denomination Carmignano DOCG, whose own text specifies "Malvasia del Chianti" by name. Colline Lucchesi's Art. 2.1 likewise uses the bare term, though its descriptive Art. 9.A2 notes that locally it is understood as "Malvasia del Chianti, sinonimo lucchese di Malvasia Bianca Lunga" — again descriptive, not normative. None of these hints are treated here as a confirmed identity; this profile documents the ambiguity rather than picking one interpretation, consistent with how Val di Magra's Groppello and Piemonte's Neretto were handled in this rollout.
