Malvasia Bianca Lunga

One of the many distinct varieties within the Malvasia family, registered in its own right and long naturalized in Tuscany, where it is the most-referenced specific Malvasia across the region's DOC/DOCG texts — most importantly as (alongside Trebbiano Toscano) the near-universal base grape of Tuscany's Vin Santo tradition, and permitted up to 100% alone in some Vin Santo typologies.

A neutral, only lightly aromatic Malvasia: dry-style wines are straw yellow, savory, soft on the palate (a function of naturally low acidity), with a bitter edge, good body, and solid alcohol. Medium ripening, with good resistance to winter cold.

SYNONYM NOTE (CONFIRMED, 2026-07-07): "Malvasia del Chianti" is an official synonym of this variety, not a separate registered grape. MASAF's own Registro Nazionale delle Varietà di Vite entry for Malvasia Bianca Lunga (scheda 132) states directly, in its Sinonimi section: "La 'Malvasia Toscana' o 'Malvasia del Chianti' [è] anche distinta secondo il Di Rovasenda e secondo il Molon con i nomi di 'Malvasia bianca'..." — i.e. the primary MASAF source itself equates "Malvasia del Chianti" with this variety. Independently, the Italian Wikipedia entry for Malvasia bianca lunga lists "malvasia del Chianti" among its synonyms and cites Carmignano DOCG by name as a denomination using the variety, and the Consorzio Vini Maremma page observed in a prior pass makes the same equivalence. Carmignano DOCG's own disciplinare text (Art. 2.1) names its grape as "Malvasia del Chianti" — a local/historical name, exactly like Montalcino's "Sangiovese" being locally called "Brunello" (see sangiovese.json) — so per this rollout's canonical-name pitfall the denomination file has been corrected to record the canonical registered name "Malvasia Bianca Lunga" with a note on the local disciplinare wording, rather than creating a separate malvasia-del-chianti.json node that would fragment the grape mesh.
