History
The castle of Verduno dates to the early 1500s and was long under the House of Savoy — King Carlo Alberto bought it in 1838 and had his cellar run by the oenologist General Staglieno. The Burlotto family bought the castle in 1909.
In 1950 commander Giovanni Battista Burlotto returned from Eritrea and turned the castle into a food-and-wine meeting place; the marriage of Gabriella Burlotto, owner of the castle, to Franco Bianco, a Barbaresco producer, brought Barolo and Barbaresco together at the estate.
Castello di Verduno is known for its Barolo Monvigliero and for championing the local Pelaverga grape, a light, floral, peppery red almost unique to Verduno.
