Nero di Troia

Nero di Troia, historically called Uva di Troia and locally Sumarello, is a red wine grape native to the north of Puglia, in the Daunia (Capitanata) around Foggia and on the Murge plateau around Andria and Castel del Monte. It is one of the region's three great black varieties alongside Negroamaro and Primitivo, and the most tannic and structured of them, long used both as a blender and, increasingly, as a serious varietal wine.

Nero di Troia produces deeply colored reds of full body with firm, sometimes austere tannins and red- and black-fruit, pepper and spice character that reward ageing. It ripens late, which suits the warm sites of northern Puglia, and is the basis of the Castel del Monte DOCG reds and the Tavoliere and Cerignola denominations.
