Gamba Rossa

Also known as Imperatrice dalla gamba rossa, Gamba di Pernice.

A rare, distinct autochthonous black grape native to the southern Asti area, registered in Italy's national vine register (codice 403, bacca nera N; admitted 19.09.2007, Gazzetta Ufficiale 253 of 30.10.2007). Unrelated to Albarossa, a 20th-century Nebbiolo x Barbera crossing it is sometimes confused with. It is the sole grape of the Calosso DOC, required at 90-100%.
