History
Barberani is the reference name for Orvieto and for Italian noble-rot wine. Founded in 1951 near Lake Corbara at the heart of the Orvieto Classico zone, the estate saw Luigi Barberani revive, from 1974, the ancient local tradition of sweet wine from botrytis-affected grapes, in the manner of Sauternes. Its Calcaia, first made in 1986, made Barberani the Italian benchmark for noble-rot wine, alongside dry Orvieto Classico of unusual depth.
