Albicocca di Valleggia
Valleggia Apricot

Grown along the Savona coast by the end of the 19th century and at its height in the 1950s and 1960s; Valleggia, a hamlet of Quiliano, grew the most of them. The fruit is small and unmistakable, thin delicate orange skin flecked brick red, and it smells and tastes far stronger than the apricots on the market.

Where it is made
the coast from Loano to Varazze, Savona province
How it is made
The trees are not espaliered as a modern orchard would be, which makes pruning and picking harder; that, and the building boom along the coast, has taken most of the plantings out over the last 30 years. Picked mid-June to mid-July.
