Schiava Grigia
Also known as Grauvernatsch.
The third genetically distinct MASAF-registered Schiava biotype (scheda 223), a clone related to Cenerina, an indigenous Trentino grape. Its cluster constantly shows traces of fruit-thinning ("impallinamento"), which together with distinguishing leaf characteristics makes it easy to tell apart from the other two Schiave even before analysis. Berries are medium-sized with an opaque blue-grey color under a dense waxy pruina, forming elongated pyramidal clusters.
Cultivated exclusively as a wine grape (like Schiava Gentile, unlike the also-table-grown Schiava Grossa), with similar vigor and harvest timing to its siblings and a wine character close to Schiava Gentile's. In Veneto it is named alongside Schiava Grossa and Schiava Gentile as one of the three biotypes making up the required minimum-85% "Schiave" blend for Valdadige's varietal typology and for the province of Verona in Vallagarina IGT.
