Riesling Italico

Also known as Welschriesling.

A white grape of central-European origin, known internationally as Welschriesling (roughly 'Latin/foreign Riesling') and, despite sharing part of its name and being widespread in northeastern Italy since the 19th century, genetically and ampelographically unrelated to true (Rhine) Riesling — no confirmed parentage between the two has ever been established. Widely planted in Italy in Lombardia (Oltrepò Pavese), Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna, with smaller plantings in Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Straw yellow with greenish reflections; fruity on the nose (quince, apricot), sometimes with light mineral notes; fresh, dry, medium-bodied on the palate with a light bitter finish. Generally less structured and aromatically complex than true Riesling.
