Malvasia Nera

"Malvasia Nera" (bare, without a 'di Brindisi'/'di Lecce'/'Lunga' place qualifier) is not itself a distinct entry in MASAF's national vine register — the register's actual black-Malvasia varieties are the specifically-named Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, Malvasia Nera di Lecce, Malvasia Nera Lunga (a separate Piedmontese variety), and Malvasia Nera di Basilicata. Several Tuscan disciplinari nonetheless use the bare term.

AMBIGUITY NOTE: the strongest available clue comes from Valdarno di Sopra's own denomination history — its pre-2024 text (the abolished 'Pietraviva' subzone, DM 13.06.2011) explicitly defined the local bare 'Malvasia nera' as coming 'da Malvasia nera di Lecce e Malvasia nera di Brindisi', i.e. a blend of those two specifically-registered varieties (which a 2018 MASAF decree separately recognized as official synonyms of one another — see malvasia-nera-di-brindisi.json). The current 2024 Valdarno di Sopra text, and Cortona's, Orcia's, and Sant'Antimo's disciplinari, all use the bare term without repeating that clarification, and Cortona's own commentary explicitly flags the identity as unresolved from its text alone. This profile documents the ambiguity rather than assuming the Pietraviva-era gloss applies uniformly to every denomination using the bare term — same treatment as Piemonte's Neretto and this rollout's bare 'Malvasia Bianca' entry.
