Incrocio Terzi n.1

Also known as Gratena.

A red-berried crossing of Barbera × Cabernet Franc, selected in the 1930s by Bergamo ampelographer/geneticist Alessandro Terzi (working with I. Cosmo, F. Sardi, and A. Calò) with the goal of combining Barbera's liveliness, acidity, and productivity with Cabernet Franc's aromatic finesse and finer tannin. Registered in Italy's National Vine Variety Register on 25.05.1970 (G.U. 149 del 17.06.1970, MASAF scheda 110); its official synonym "Gratena" was recognized more recently by DM 30.05.2018 (G.U. 133 dell'11.06.2018). Remained a niche variety grown mainly in Lombardia and Piedmont, valued for agronomic solidity even as it never became widely planted. Wines show intense ruby color with violet reflections and aromas of cherry, black currant, blackberry, and violet, with fresh, structured palates and generally ripe tannins.

A named varietal-specification grape in three Bergamo/Brescia-area Lombard denominations: minimum 85% for Terre del Colleoni's varietal "Incrocio Terzi" typology, minimum 10% in Cellatica's blend (where the disciplinare spells out the cross as "Incrocio terzi n.1 (Barbera per Cabernet franc)"), and one of seven varieties admitted for Ronchi di Brescia's generic red — the last two disciplinari using the capitalized form "Incrocio Terzi N.1," canonicized here to the lowercase "n.1" form used by Terre del Colleoni and MASAF's own registry (both slugify identically, so the grape-mesh link is unaffected either way).
