Frappato

Also known as Frappato di Vittoria.

Frappato is a perfumed, light-bodied red grape of south-eastern Sicily, centred on the Vittoria area in the provinces of Ragusa and Catania. It is best known as the fragrant partner to Nero d'Avola in the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, where it lifts the blend with aroma and freshness, but it is increasingly bottled on its own as a bright, food-friendly varietal red.

The wines are pale in colour with light tannins, high acidity, and a distinctive floral, red-fruit perfume of strawberry, red cherry and violet. Frappato is often compared to lighter northern reds for its drinkability and is typically enjoyed young, sometimes with a slight chill.
