Casavecchia

Casavecchia is a rare red wine grape native to the province of Caserta in Campania, centred on the village of Pontelatone in the hills north of the Volturno. Nearly lost during the twentieth century, it was rediscovered and propagated from surviving old vines toward the end of the century, and gained its own denomination, Casavecchia di Pontelatone DOC, in 2011. Its name is popularly linked to an old vine found growing by a ruined house ('casa vecchia').

Casavecchia produces deeply colored reds, ruby tending to garnet with age, with medium-to-full body, firm but ripe tannins and an intense, persistent, savoury character. It is vinified as a varietal (minimum 85% in its DOC) in both a standard and a riserva version.
