Barsaglina

Also known as Massaretta.

An autochthonous native of the coastal hills of upper Tuscany, an early-budding, low-fertility variety that ripens roughly a week ahead of Sangiovese (per Candia dei Colli Apuani's own disciplinare, Art. 9.A2). "Massaretta" is a local synonym for the same variety, not a distinct grape — the disciplinare names the DOC's monovarietal red typology 'Barsaglina o Massaretta' explicitly on that basis (Art. 1.1/2.1).

Central to Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC, one of the most atypical ampelographic platforms in Tuscany (built around Vermentino, both white and black-berried, and Barsaglina rather than the region's usual Sangiovese/Trebbiano Toscano base).
