History

Santa Sofia, founded in 1811, is one of the oldest wine estates in the Veneto, in the Pedemonte hamlet of San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica.

Its cellars occupy the Renaissance Villa Sarego (Villa Santa Sofia), designed by Andrea Palladio around 1560 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Under the Begnoni family, owners of the estate, an intensive collaboration with selected local growers begun in the early 1960s underpins its Amarone, Recioto and Valpolicella, with the Amarone 'Gioè' Riserva aged in the sixteenth-century cellars beneath the villa.
