History
The Piona family's Cavalchina, on the south-eastern edge of the Garda amphitheatre near Sommacampagna, dates its winemaking to 1948, when Luciano Piona planted the first vineyards and began making wine after the war.
Luciano was a pioneer of the area's white wines and, in 1962, the first to write 'Custoza' on a label to distinguish it — helping put the Custoza DOC on the map.
Now a four-generation estate led by Franco Piona and his nephew Francesco, Cavalchina makes Custoza — including the acclaimed Amedeo Superiore — and Bardolino.
