History

The Bea family has farmed the land around Montefalco in central Umbria for generations, and Paolo Bea began bottling under the family name in 1980, continuing a peasant tradition of working the vines and cellar entirely by natural means. The estate has become one of Italy's most revered names for Sagrantino, the region's dark, powerfully tannic native red, and a touchstone of the artisanal-wine movement.

Winemaking is deliberately non-interventionist: farming without chemical or artificial inputs, spontaneous fermentations, long macerations and extended ageing, with the aim of letting the vineyard and vintage speak. The architect-winemaker Giampiero Bea, Paolo's son, has led the wines to international cult status while keeping the approach uncompromising.

The flagships are two single-vineyard, 100% Sagrantino secco bottlings — Pagliaro and the higher-elevation Cerrete — alongside a Rosso de Véo, the Montefalco Rosso Riserva 'San Valentino', a white 'Arboreus' from trebbiano spoletino trained up trees, and the traditional sweet Sagrantino Passito. The wines are known for demanding, age-worthy structure.
