History

The Gries site, an 11th-century fortress turned monastery, was settled in 1845 by Benedictine monks arriving from Muri in Switzerland, who brought a more sophisticated approach to its vineyards.

The estate first bottled its own wines in 1968 and from 1985 focused on the native Lagrein, earning its name as the 'Lagrein monastery'.

It remains a working monastery farming 35 hectares.
