History

Uccelliera was founded in 1986 by Andrea Cortonesi, the son of sharecroppers, who had trained as cellar master at the neighbouring Ciacci Piccolomini before buying this small property — with century-old olives and a little vineyard — from his former employers.

His first vintage, in 1991, was a mere 500 bottles, but Cortonesi built Uccelliera into one of Castelnuovo dell'Abate's most respected estates.

Today it makes Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino alongside the Super Tuscan Rapace, all from its south-eastern Montalcino vineyards.
