History

San Filippo was founded in 1972 in the east of Montalcino, on grounds with a farmhouse and chapel dating to 1672, and made its first Brunello in 1977.

In 2003 the estate was bought by Roberto Giannelli, a former Florence real-estate agent, whose investment in vineyards and cellar markedly raised the quality.

Its vineyards fall into four plots — Le Lucére, La Storta, Le Raffiche and La Smarrita — with the north-east-facing Le Lucére yielding the estate's most structured, age-worthy Brunello.
