History

Cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino founded the house at Pontassieve, near Florence, in 1877, building it around the commercial shipping of Tuscan wine. Its Chianti won gold medals at international exhibitions in the 1880s (Milan 1881, Antwerp 1885), and in 1890 the Duke of Aosta, impressed by the wines, named Ruffino an official supplier to the Italian royal family.

In 1927 the house released the first vintage of Riserva Ducale, named in honour of the Duke's patronage; the Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale and its top selection Riserva Ducale Oro remain the wines most associated with Ruffino. Ruffino is also credited as one of the first Chianti houses to export to the United States.

Today Ruffino works estates across Tuscany, with Chianti Classico at its core alongside Chianti and other Tuscan appellations.
