History

Mastrojanni was founded in 1975 when the lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the San Pio and Loreto estates at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the far south-east of Montalcino — then poor, steep land of oak and broom.

The estate built a reputation for structured, long-lived Brunello, above all from the Vigna Schiena d'Asino cru, named for the 'donkey's back' shape of its hill.

In 2008 the estate was bought by the Illy family's group, and it continues to make Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino from its Castelnuovo dell'Abate vineyards.
