History
La Gerla was founded in 1976 by Sergio Rossi, a Milanese who in 1975 bought the Podere Colombaio Santi — an old farmhouse with 6.5 hectares of vineyard — from Tedina Biondi-Santi. Having managed the Altesino-Caparzo estate, he renamed the property La Gerla, for the conical harvest baskets, and replanted by selection massale.
His first vintage, 1976, made La Gerla one of the roughly 35 original bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino.
Today the estate spans 11.5 hectares, split between the original Canalicchio vineyard and five hectares at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, producing Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino.
