History

Fornacina was founded by Ruggero Biliorsi, who crafted his first Brunello in 1981. The estate farms just five hectares — three around the winery at 400 metres on south-facing slopes, and two at Castelnuovo dell'Abate.

Since 2004 the estate has been certified organic, and it markets only what it can obtain from the family's own land, some 20,000 to 25,000 bottles a year.

Ruggero's sons Simone and Mauro Biliorsi now lead the winery, ageing their Brunello in large Slavonian oak casks.
