History
Fattoria di Gratena is a historic Aretine estate whose origins go back to the 13th century, when monks guarded the Chiana canal here before the Battle of Campaldino (1289).
Owned by the Sieni family since 1968 - today Rosanna and Paolo Sieni with grandson Fabio de Ambrogi - it farms about 16-18 hectares of vineyard organically (certified from 1994) within a 180-hectare estate at around 400 metres.
Alongside Sangiovese it champions Gratena Nero, a rare local grape recognised as a distinct variety in 2010 and named for the estate.
