History
The castle at Verrazzano, in the Chianti Classico hills of Greve, has been settled for over a thousand years and was the property of the Verrazzano family from the 7th century; the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, who charted the bay of New York, was born there in 1485. Its vineyards are documented in a 1150 manuscript.
The last Verrazzano died in 1819 and the estate passed through several Florentine families before the Cappellini family took it over in 1958, restoring the villa and replanting the vineyards. The estate was a founding member of the Chianti Classico Consorzio.
The Cappellini family makes Chianti Classico and Toscana IGT wines and, per the estate, has farmed organically with certification since the 2014 vintage.
