History
Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by the Pira and Alessandria families, when brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria took ownership of land at Serralunga that had been part of the Opera Pia Barolo and traditionally worked by sharecroppers — hence the name 'schiavenza'.
The estate remains a classic family-and-village operation, with the Alessandria family also running the Trattoria Schiavenza in Serralunga.
Today the second-generation sisters Enrica and Maura Alessandria, with their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma, make traditional Barolo from crus including Prapò, Cerretta and Broglio.
