History
The Alfieri were granted the fief of San Martino in 1615, and in 1696 Carlo Antonio Massimiliano Alfieri built the castle, winery and park; the family's records note vineyards on these Monferrato hills between Asti and Alba as far back as 1337.
Since 1983 the estate has been run by three sisters — Emanuela, Antonella and Giovanna San Martino di San Germano — with Mario Olivero as winemaker from 1999. Across some twenty-one hectares, mostly Barbera, it makes about a hundred thousand bottles a year, led by the Barbera d'Asti Superiore 'Alfiera' and 'La Tota'.
