History

The Giorgi di Vistarino family has held the vast Rocca de' Giorgi estate in the Oltrepò Pavese since 1629. In 1850 Count Augusto Giorgi di Vistarino imported Pinot Noir cuttings from France and became the first to plant the grape in the Oltrepò, founding the region's great sparkling tradition; in 1865 he made its first spumante.

The vines proved so suited to the terroir that other growers followed, making the Oltrepò the cradle of Italian Pinot Noir.

The 826-hectare estate, with 200 hectares of vineyard and 140 of Pinot Nero, still belongs to the family, whose signature wines include the Costa del Nero Pinot Nero and the Cépage metodo classico.
