History
Le Coste was created from scratch in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzi and Clémentine Bouveron, who resurrected abandoned terraces in the village of Gradoli, in the volcanic Alta Tuscia of northern Lazio above Lake Bolsena. Working ancient, iron-rich volcanic soils with a viticultural history reaching back to the Etruscans, the couple built one of natural wine's most cult-followed estates.
Farming is biodynamic and radical: densely planted vineyards (up to ~10,000 vines per hectare), massale selections and ungrafted vines, hand harvest, and a gravity-fed cellar with no pumps. Fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, whole-bunch (including for whites), with no additives and no added sulfur, aged mostly in fibreglass and neutral vessels.
The range shifts every year, built on local varieties — Procanico (Trebbiano), Roscetto, Aleatico and others — and released under humble names ('Rosso', 'Bianco', 'Litrozzo', 'Pizzicante', the Aleatico-based reds). The wines are rustic-sublime, transparent and site-driven, mostly bottled as Lazio IGT.
