History
Quarticello was founded in 2001 by Roberto Maestri in the 'Quarticello' locality of Montecchio Emilia, in the Val d'Enza of Reggio Emilia. His grandfather had made wine as a hobby; Roberto fell for the land, took a degree in viticulture and oenology, and from 2006 began bottling his own grapes using the traditional Emilian method of bottle refermentation on cold-preserved must.
Farming is organic and biodynamic, on the diverse soils at the foot of the Tosco-Emilian Apennines, with the aim of championing the native grapes of the area — the many Lambruschi alongside Malvasia di Candia, Spergola and Malbo Gentile. In the cellar there is no filtration, no fining and no chemical additions.
The signature wines are ancestral-method sparklers refermented in bottle with only cold-stored grape must (no added sugar or selected yeasts) — the Lambruschi 'Spuma Mia' and others, plus a Spergola and Malbo Gentile — precise, gastronomic expressions of traditional Emilian frizzante.
