Paternoster

History

Paternoster, founded at Barile on the slopes of Monte Vulture in 1925, is one of the most historic wineries of southern Italy and a pioneer in taking Aglianico del Vulture to the wider world. Anselmo Paternoster was the first of the family to bottle and market the region's Aglianico, rather than making it only for home.

The estate farms black, mineral-rich volcanic soils in the districts around Barile, including the celebrated crus Don Anselmo and Rotondo, with old vines above roughly 640 metres on the extinct volcano. Since 2016 it has belonged to Tommasi Family Estates, with the fourth generation and winemaker Fabio Mecca continuing the house style.

The flagship 'Don Anselmo' — 100% Aglianico, named for the founder — and the single-vineyard 'Rotondo' are benchmarks of the great volcanic Aglianico del Vulture, alongside the more approachable 'Synthesi'.
