Verduzzo Trevigiano

A white grape whose name ("Trevigiano" — of Treviso) points to its home ground in Treviso province, distinct from the similarly-named but unrelated Verduzzo Friulano of neighboring Friuli — the two once shared the generic name "Verduzzo" and were sometimes grown together, but DNA profiling in 2010-2011 confirmed them as clearly separate varieties (MASAF scheda 257 for this one). Ampelographers have not definitively confirmed an indigenous Treviso origin; unproven anecdotal speculation once suggested a Sardinian introduction in the early 20th century, without DNA support.

A vigorous vine adaptable to a wide range of climates and soils, with a late-ripening habit well suited to late-harvest wines. Around 1,734 hectares were recorded nationally as of 2000, concentrated in Treviso and Venezia provinces. Higher-yielding but less aromatic and flavorful than Verduzzo Friulano, it appears by name in Lison-Pramaggiore and Piave DOC as well as several eastern Veneto IGTs, and is frequently blended with Verduzzo Friulano in wines simply labeled "Verduzzo."
