Veltliner

"Veltliner" is not a single grape but a name shared by at least two genetically unrelated Central European white varieties, both independently registered in Italy's National Vine Variety Register and both grown in Trentino-Alto Adige: Grüner Veltliner, Austria's signature aromatic white (a natural cross of Savagnin/Traminer with an unnamed vine found at St. Georgen am Leithagebirge), and Roter Veltliner, an older, unrelated Austrian variety that is itself a parent of Neuburger, Zierfandler and Rotgipfler. Despite the shared name suggesting a family relationship, DNA analysis in the late 1990s confirmed the two have no genetic link.

The Vallagarina IGT disciplinare names "Veltliner" as a permitted grape for the province of Verona without further qualifying which of the two it means — its own text is read here (per data/denominations/vallagarina.json's own note) as "a probable reference to Veltliner Verde/Grüner Veltliner," but not conclusively so. Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT likewise names bare "Veltliner" (there, as one of the varieties excluded from varietal-label specification in Bolzano/Trento provinces) without disambiguating further. Given the genuine textual ambiguity and the existence of two separate, unrelated MASAF-registered varieties both plausibly in scope, this dataset leaves the grape's precise identity here explicitly unresolved rather than guessing — the same documented-not-guessed treatment already used for Piemonte's Neretto and Toscana's bare Malvasia entries.
