Trebbiano Spoletino

Trebbiano Spoletino is a white grape historically grown around Spoleto and the wider Montefalco zone in Umbria. Despite its name it is genetically distinct from Trebbiano Toscano and the other grapes that share the Trebbiano label, and it has drawn renewed attention from Umbrian growers as a characterful local white in its own right. Some of its oldest vines are trained up living maple and elm trees in the traditional vite maritata (married vine) style still seen in the Spoleto plain.

The variety is prized for naturally high acidity and structure, giving fresh, savory whites that can carry skin contact, lees ageing, and time in bottle better than most Italian Trebbiani. Typical flavors run to citrus, white orchard fruit, and herbal and saline notes. It appears in the Spoleto and Montefalco denominations, both as a varietal wine and in blends.
