Schioppettino

Schioppettino, also called Ribolla Nera, is a red wine grape of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, most closely associated with the village of Prepotto near the Slovenian border. Nearly lost in the twentieth century, it was saved from oblivion by local growers and a special authorization in the 1970s-80s, and is now one of Friuli's most distinctive reds.

Schioppettino produces medium-to-full-bodied reds of ruby color with a signature black-pepper spiciness alongside red- and black-fruit, herbs and violet, with fresh acidity and moderate, fine tannins. It is bottled as a varietal within the Friuli Colli Orientali denomination, with a Prepotto sub-designation.
