Schiava

"Schiava" (bare, without a further qualifying name) is the generic umbrella term for a family of at least four genuinely distinct MASAF-registered red varieties sharing the historic German synonym "Vernatsch": Schiava Gentile (scheda 222), Schiava Grigia (scheda 223), and Schiava Grossa (scheda 289) — the Alto Adige trio, all already profiled individually in this dataset — plus the ampelographically unrelated Lombard native Schiava Lombarda (scheda 224, also profiled individually here), confirmed by independent ampelographic sources (quattrocalici.it) to be genetically distinct from the Alto Adige three despite sharing the same generic family name.

AMBIGUITY NOTE: Several Lombard denominations use the bare term "Schiava" without specifying which of the four registered varieties is meant, and their own disciplinare text gives no further clue to resolve it: Ronchi di Brescia (one of seven varieties for the generic red, Art. 2), Terre Lariane (one of seven varieties for red varietal specification, Art. 2.3, where Art. 8 additionally glosses it historically as the local "butascera"/"borgognina"), and Bergamasca IGT (given its own dedicated yield/alcohol/rosato thresholds distinct from the rest of the varietal range, Art. 4/Art. 6). Per this rollout's standing practice for genuinely unresolved grape identities (same treatment as Piemonte's Neretto, Toscana's bare Malvasia entries, and this dataset's own bare 'Groppello'), this profile documents the ambiguity across all three denominations rather than guessing which of the four Schiava varieties each one means — the 'butascera' gloss in Terre Lariane is suggestive of Schiava Lombarda specifically (one of whose own MASAF-recognized synonyms is 'Bottascera'), but is not treated as confirmation since the disciplinare itself does not make that link explicit.
