Schiava Grossa

The largest-berried, highest-yielding of the three genetically distinct Schiava biotypes registered separately in Italy's National Vine Variety Register (MASAF scheda 289, alongside Schiava Gentile scheda 222 and Schiava Grigia scheda 223, all sharing the official synonym "Schiava"/"Vernatsch") — not a loose regional nickname but three legally and ampelographically separate varieties. Large blue-black berries with abundant bloom form large, compact clusters, harvested late September, concentrated in Bolzano province.

Unlike Schiava Gentile and Schiava Grigia, which are grown exclusively for wine, Schiava Grossa (along with the related biotype Tschaggele) is also used as a table grape. On its own it tends toward light-bodied, neutral-tasting wine; in Veneto it is named alongside Schiava Gentile and Schiava Grigia as one of the three biotypes making up the required minimum-85% "Schiave" blend for Valdadige's varietal typology and for the province of Verona in Vallagarina IGT.
