Quagliano

Red grapePiedmont, Italy (Saluzzo area)
← Grapes

A black grape indigenous to the hills around Saluzzo in Piedmont, with the earliest documentary references found in official records from Busca (1721) and Costigliole Saluzzo (1749). Grown across the municipalities of Pagno and Piasco (in full) and parts of Brondello, Busca, Castellar, Costigliole Saluzzo, Dronero, Envie, Manta, Martiniana Po, Revello, Saluzzo, Verzuolo, and Villar San Costanzo. Produces both a still and a sparkling DOC wine, both labelled "Colline Saluzzesi Quagliano." The name likely derives from the dialect word "caià" (curdled/coagulated), referring to a historical winemaking method.
