Negrara

A black-skinned grape belonging to the broader "Negrare" family — several distinct varieties grown mainly in Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto, particularly Verona province's Valpolicella and Lake Garda shoreline, with limited spread into Lombardia (Colli Mantovani, Garda bresciano) and Trentino. Once widely planted historically, its presence has declined steadily through the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Medium-large pentagonal, five-lobed leaves and large, somewhat elongated, winged pyramidal clusters carry large, irregularly spherical berries with a very pruinose, thick, tough, astringent blue-violet skin — thick skins and high tannin that make it useful in small percentages for adding structure to a blend. It is a traditional minor component of the Valpolicella/Amarone family of wines, and appears as a named varietal-specification grape in Vallagarina and Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT.
