Malvasia Nera di Brindisi

Also known as Malvasia Negra, Malvasia di Bitonto, Malvasia di Trani, Malvasia Nera di Candia.

A black grape registered in MASAF's national vine register under its own catalog code (scheda 140), studied on a clone selected at the Ente della Viticoltura's Brindisi nursery (contrada Montenegro). Recent DNA/ampelographic research (see e.g. the cultivar study linking it and Malvasia Nera di Lecce to Negroamaro x Malvasia Bianca Lunga parentage) found the Brindisi and Lecce biotypes to be genetically identical plants, and a Ministerial Decree of 30 May 2018 (Gazzetta Ufficiale n. 133 of 11/06/2018) formally recognized synonymy between Malvasia Nera di Brindisi N. (140) and Malvasia Nera di Lecce N. (141) in the national register.

Despite that recognized synonymy, MASAF's registry keeps both under separate catalog codes, and Toscana's own Montecarlo disciplinare still treats them as two separately electable blend components ('da sola e/o insieme a Malvasia Nera di Brindisi', Art. 2.1) — practical, aromatic differences are still commonly cited (Brindisi's biotype is described as having a slightly more aromatic tone than Lecce's). This profile is kept distinct from malvasia-nera-di-lecce.json to match that continuing dual naming, with the confirmed 2018 synonymy documented here rather than silently merged.
