Malvasia Istriana

Also known as Malvasia d'Istria, Malvasia Friulana.

A white grape registered in its own right in MASAF's national vine register (scheda 138), genetically and legally distinct from Malvasia Bianca di Candia (scheda 131) and Malvasia Bianca Lunga (scheda 132) despite the shared family name — Valdichiana Toscana's disciplinare explicitly lists all three side by side as separate varieties grouped under the umbrella term 'Malvasia bianca'.

Native to the northeastern Adriatic (Istria), historically the aromatic Malvasia most associated with Friuli-Venezia Giulia's Collio and Carso, where it typically gives dry, saline, orchard-fruit wines. MASAF's own registry entry notes the historical alternate names 'Malvasia bianca', 'M. d'Istria', 'M. friulana', and a possible link to 'Malvasia del Carso'.
