Magliocco
Also known as Magliocco Canino, Magliocco Dolce, Arvino, Lacrima Nera.
Magliocco is a native Calabrian red grape — or rather a pair of related grapes, Magliocco Canino and Magliocco Dolce, sometimes confused with each other and with Gaglioppo but now recognised as distinct. It is grown across Calabria, especially in the province of Cosenza, and is a leading grape of the Terre di Cosenza DOC as well as a component of Savuto, Scavigna and others.
It gives deeply coloured, structured reds with ripe dark fruit, spice and Mediterranean-herb character, firm but ripe tannins and good acidity, capable of both fruity everyday wines and more serious, age-worthy bottlings. It has been central to the modern revival of quality Calabrian red wine.
